Master of Science in Nursing Education

For those who know they have more to offer, the Marian University Leighton School of Nursing now offers a Master of Science in Nursing with a nursing education focus.  The program will be delivered through a hybrid platform with a larger percent of the courses on line. 

Students will have an opportunity to engage in real-time class meetings in orientation and throughout the semester to establish relationships with peers and faculty. Students will demonstrate theoretical content with a field-based, 225-hour practicum, which will include a culminating project. 

Graduates of the MSN program will be prepared to assume nurse educator roles in schools of nursing, health care facilities and in the community.

Our Philosophy

The graduate nursing programs embrace the mission and vision of the University as a Catholic university dedicated to excellent teaching and learning in the Franciscan and liberal arts traditions. The Master of Science in Nursing, Nurse Educator program emulates The Essentials of Master’s Education in Nursing (AACN, 2011). Professional nurses will find holistic, value- and evidenced-based programs that promote the needs of a diverse student population in an ever-changing world.

The faculty inspires a learning environment that reflects the Franciscan values: dignity of the individual, peace and justice, reconciliation and responsible stewardship. The faculty will apply the principles essential in servant teaching to produce professional nurses that are willing to transform healthcare and nursing education. The servant teacher models the characteristics of honesty, integrity, caring, trust and encouragement. The faculty recognizes learning is a unique, individualized process; therefore they develop active and collaborative strategies with students that stimulate clinical reasoning, facilitate behavioral and attitudinal change, and promote the attainment of program outcomes.

The faculty members believe that the program outcomes are achieved when trust and respect are established between the student and teacher. An egalitarian relationship is established supporting a spirit of inquiry and debate. Students will engage to tailor learning that will enhance professional practice, resolve practice challenges, and promote high quality healthcare. Students will influence practice through the translation of evidenced-based outcomes to create change by disseminating results.

Students and faculty foster a commitment to lifelong learning. Graduates of the program will be prepared to assume advanced nursing roles in schools of nursing, health care facilities and in the community. The student’s individual career goals will be considered when selecting the educational experiences. Collaborative classes will provide an opportunity to learn, solve problems and analyze challenges that are common in the interdisciplinary healthcare system.

Course Descriptions

NSG 501 Epidemiology and Biostatistics for Advanced Practice (3 credits) Prerequisite
This course focuses on an epidemiological approach used to understand complex causes of public health problems. The development and applications of methods to collect, analyze and interpret public health data is examined.

NSG 502 Theoretical Foundations of Nursing Practice (3 Credits)
This course focuses on foundational theories and research in nursing and other allied theories related to education.  Concepts and theoretical foundations will be researched, analyzed and applied. The Franciscan Values will be integrated.

NSG 503 Advanced Physiology and Pathophysiology (3 credits)
This course focuses the knowledge of advanced physiology and pathophysiology. The topics focus on the normal physiology and abnormal physiological mechanisms of disease. The knowledge gained serves as a foundation for clinical assessment, decision making and management of patient care.

NSG 504 Advanced Pharmacology (3 Credits)
This course will expand pharmacological principles needed for safe medication administration and assessment. Poly-pharmacy, drug interactions and identification of adverse reactions will be comprehensively explored.

NSG 505 Policy, Organization and Financing of Health Care (3 Credits)
This course will explore health care policy and the role of the nurse in developing and analyzing policy components that impact the nursing care and the health of the society. The focus will be on current trends in organizational and financial structure of health care institutions. The role of the servant leader will be explored.

NSG 506 Advanced Health Assessment (3 Credits)
This course focuses on the skills necessary to perform an advanced health history and health assessment. A holistic approach with an emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention will be explored.

NSG 507 Research in Nursing (3 Credits)
This course will provide the scientific base to provide high quality health care, initiate change and create policy and procedures. Students will explore in depth evidenced based research concerning specific clinical and/or educational challenges. Methods and critical appraisal of nursing research for evidenced based practice will be analyzed.

NSG 512 Teaching and Learning (3 credits)       
This course focuses on foundation theories and research in nursing education. The art of teaching will be explored through a variety of teaching methodologies and strategies. Faculty role socialization is embraced with concepts such as the Franciscan Values and servant teacher.

NSG 513 Measurement and Evaluation (3 credits)
This course will examine curriculum, classroom and clinical performance evaluation. Students will analyze and create processes to evaluate learner outcomes. Knowledge of standards and benchmarks will be applied to improve outcomes.

NSG 514 Curriculum Development in Nursing (3 credits)
In this course, the student will understand challenges in designing a nursing curriculum including the need for a logical and reliable design. One of the outcomes of the course is to develop a curriculum that is consistent with the parent institution, the philosophy of the faculty, research guidelines and standards.

NSG 515 Role of the Nurse Educator (3 credits)
This course will explore the role of the nurse educator as a master’s prepared nurse according to the Boyer Domains. The student will discern the balance of the nurse educator roles of teaching, scholarship and practice in the university and clinical organization. 

NSG 517 Course/Program/Project Development (3 credits)
This course will provide students an opportunity to pursue an area of interest not covered in or more in depth than existing courses.   The students will develop a course/program in the area of interest.  A learning contract with be developed with a faculty advisor who possesses special competence in the area involved.  The culminating project will be one of the outcomes of this course. A total of 45 practicum hours will be devoted to the project.

NSG 560 Nursing Educator Practicum (5 credits)
This course will provide the student with active experiences in nursing education. The preceptor model will be utilized to model and facilitate educational experiences.
Nurse Educator Practicum planning will be based on self-assessment of the graduates in a portfolio. This portfolio will be used to plan the number of clinical hours in teaching groups (class or community), teaching individuals (clinical or orientation), and simulation (students or continuing education). A total 225 practicum hours will be completed in this course.

Program Outcomes

In congruence with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing in The Essentials of Master’s Education for nursing (AACN, 2011), the Marian University Master of Science in Nursing students will:

  1. Integrate evidenced-based findings from nursing, humanities, and sciences for continued quality improvement of nursing education across diverse settings.
  2. Holistically analyze and evaluate organizational and system structure to promote high quality nursing educational practices.
  3. Analyze leadership skills to facilitate ethical and critical decision making, create working relationships and incorporate a systems perspective.
  4. Analyze and create methods, tools, performance measures and standards to provide quality nursing education.
  5. Apply research outcomes to facilitate learning, resolve nursing education practice challenges, create change and disseminate results.
  6. Utilize current technology to enhance nursing education and communication in the learning and clinical environment.
  7. Intervene at a system level through policy development and to employ advocacy strategies to influence nursing education.
  8. As a member of an interdisciplinary team, influence patient outcomes and nursing education, through collaborating, communicating and consulting with other disciplines involved in health care.
  9. Integrate and model clinical prevention and population health concepts in the provision of culturally relevant education, communication and patient centered care.
  10. Provide and model high quality and safe health care through an in-depth, expanded understanding of nursing and relevant sciences.
  11. Model a culture of excellence through continued life-long learning and a spirit of inquiry and debate.
  12. Demonstrate professional practices that translate an understanding of nursing’s heritage, cultural diversity, bioethics and the Franciscan values and servant teaching.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the graduate program requires approval by the Marian University Leighton School of Nursing faculty and is based on the following requirements:

  • A degree in nursing from a NLNAC or CCNE accredited program. 
  • Current, valid RN license in the State of Indiana.
  • Applicants must present with an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.00/4.00.
  • Three recommendations from individuals with at least a master’s degree that can attest to your academic ability, work ethic, professional contributions and potential for success in graduate school.  One of the three recommendations must be from a previous academic professor.
  • Interview with the Admissions Committee.
  • Current resume.
  • A 500-word essay addressing your career goals.

The GRE score is not required for admission.

Prerequisite

To apply, applicants you must have completed or be enrolled in a 500-level graduate course in epidemiology biostatistics or statistics.  Three (3) semester hours or equivalent quarter hours are required with a grade of a B or better at a regionally accredited college or university.
