Information on GI Bill Benefits

Unsure if you are eligible for GI Bill benefits or need additional information?

  • Find out: payment rates, program eligibility, link to the application for GI bill, form 22-1990 if you have not yet applied.

  • All 2nd degree students should contact Julie Brinegar, Student Account Manager about a tuition estimate.

Are you the child or spouse of a veteran?

Possible programs through the GI Bill that you may qualify for:

  1. The DOD transfer of the post 911 to spouse or children – information and eligibility requirements at http://www.benefits.va.gov/gibill/post911_transfer.asp.
  2. Chapter 35 benefit for children/spouses of disabled veterans DEA or the Fry Scholarship for children and spouses of Service members who died in the line of duty after September 10, 2001 requirements at http://www.benefits.va.gov/gibill/survivor_dependent_assistance.asp.

Note that Marian is a private, not a public institution. Discounts and state of Indiana sponsored programs for children of veterans and Purple Heart recipients DO NOT apply at private institutions such as Marian. The State of Indiana will not pay tuition for these programs at private institutions.

How to begin receiving GI Bill benefits at Marian University

  1. Be admitted to Marian university as a degree seeking student.
  2. Submit your application for benefits online to the VA, form 22-1990 immediately, if you have not already done so.
  3. Submit to the school certifying official:
  • Your DD214 if you have been discharged
  • Your certificate of eligibility from the VA listing months and percentage of eligibility once you receive this from the VA
  • The completed copy of the Marian GI Bill Benefits Form

4. All 2nd degree students should contact Julie Brinegar for a tuition estimate using GI Bill.
5. Register for classes, and notify the school certifying official.

Important Information to Continue Your Benefits

  • The VA will only pay for classes required for your degree(s); general education, major, minor and required elective courses.
  • The VA pays for attendance. If you fail a class because you stop attending, the VA may ask you for a refund of tuition funds paid as of the last date of attendance.
  • You must notify the school certifying official if your credit hours change or you add or drop classes in any term or semester.
  • Once benefits begin, you will be automatically submitted for subsequent classes unless you notify the school official NOT to submit certain classes or terms.
  • The VA WILL pay a maximum for those 100% eligible for the post 911 chapter 33 of no more than $21.970.46* per academic year (fall through summer).

*This amount renews and increases slightly each school year (fall). Please note that you are responsible for tuition amounts that exceed this, unless you are eligible for the yellow ribbon program. Students who are eligible at less than 100% are always responsible for a portion themselves and should contact our financial aid office and business office regarding loans, aid and payment plans.

Yellow Ribbon Program

Will pay up to an additional $16,000 ($8,000 each maximum from the VA and Marian) beyond the $21,970.46 to students who exceed this tuition amount and are eligible for Yellow Ribbon

To receive benefits under the Yellow Ribbon Program:

  • You must be eligible for the maximum benefit rate under the Post-9/11 GI Bill – 100%.
  • You must not be on active duty or a spouse of an active duty service person using transferred entitlement.
  • You must be in a first degree traditional program classes at Marian (Graduate programs, COM school, MAP, and 2nd degree program students cannot receive yellow ribbon).
