Gwen Tohill-Macam is a 1992 graduate of Seoul American High School in Seoul, South Korea. She spent her childhood years living overseas in South Korea and Saudi Arabia and returned to the United States to attend college. She graduated from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in communications. She went on to receive a master’s degree in college student personnel administration from Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana in 1998. Prior to her current position, Gwen worked in higher education, specifically residence life and development and worked in admission at a private elementary school.
Currently, Gwen serves as the St. Louis regional admission counselor for Marian University. She lives in Glen Carbon, Illinois but actively recruits students from the St. Louis and Illinois Metro East surrounding area. Although not an alum of Marian, Gwen is impressed with the welcoming and friendly nature of the campus community. As a small campus, the students, faculty and staff are supportive of each other and truly has the feel of being very “family friendly.”
Gwen’s advice to incoming students would be to keep an open mind about the admission process and to look at a variety of different schools. Students should not limit themselves, but should make sure that the school they choose is a good fit. Therefore, campus visit days are a really important element in finding the right match; be sure to take advantage of them. To help find the right fit, students need to think about what factors are most important in guiding their overall search.
